Environmental Labelling for Packaging in Germany

Germany’s packaging regime is registration-led rather than logo-led. Before you place a single unit on the German market you must be registered in LUCID and participating in a dual system — and marketplaces check it. We set out what applies to you.

What applies

What Germany requires on your packaging

Legal basis: the Verpackungsgesetz (VerpackG), administered by the Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister. Germany is the market where brands most often expect a labelling job and get a registration job instead. There is no German equivalent of the Triman mark; the obligation sits in LUCID and the dual system.

LUCID registration

Registration with the Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister before placing packaging on the market. It must come first.

Dual system contract

Participation in a duales System for household packaging, with volumes reported and matched to your LUCID number.

Data reporting

Reporting packaging volumes by material to both the register and your dual system.

On-pack marking

No statutory sorting logo is mandated. The Green Dot is a scheme mark, used under licence, not a legal requirement.

The deliverable

What the Germany guide contains

  • A component-by-component breakdown: outer carton, primary container, closure or pump, label, leaflet.
  • The exact marking required on each component, and the conditions attached to using it.
  • The precise wording of any sorting or disposal statement, in German.
  • Placement and legibility requirements where the national rules specify them.
  • The registration and reporting duties that sit alongside the marking.
Avoid these

Common mistakes with Germany packaging rules

  • Signing a dual system contract before registering in LUCID — the registration has to come first.
  • Registering the distributor rather than the entity that actually places the packaging on the market.
  • Assuming a Green Dot on the pack demonstrates German compliance. It does not; LUCID does.
  • Forgetting shipping packaging and filling material, which count alongside your product packaging.
  • Discovering the requirement when a marketplace suspends the listing for a missing LUCID number.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special logo on my packaging for Germany?

Generally no. Unlike France, Germany does not mandate a consumer sorting mark. The obligation is registration in LUCID and participation in a dual system, which is why brands expecting a labelling answer are often surprised.

I sell only through Amazon in Germany. Am I exempt?

No — the opposite. Marketplaces are required to check that sellers are registered, so selling through Amazon tends to surface the obligation faster, not remove it.

What does the guide give me if there is no logo to apply?

A clear statement of which obligations apply to your packaging, which entity carries them, what has to be registered and reported, and what marking is genuinely optional. Knowing you do not need artwork is a useful answer.
