France asks for something no other member state does
Under the AGEC law — loi anti-gaspillage pour une économie circulaire — and Article R.541-12-17 of the French Environmental Code, products and packaging placed on the French market must carry the Triman logo together with Info-Tri sorting instructions. The Info-Tri element tells the consumer, component by component, which waste stream each part of your packaging belongs in.
This is a packaging obligation, not a cosmetics one, which is exactly why cosmetic brands miss it. A perfectly compliant EU cosmetic label can still be rejected by a French retailer for the absence of a sorting mark.
What this service produces
- Component breakdown — bottle, cap, pump, carton, leaflet, shrink film: each identified and assigned its sorting stream.
- Correct layout — the Triman logo and Info-Tri block laid out to the prescribed form for your packaging format.
- Wording — the French sorting instructions per component, phrased as required.
- Placement & size — where it must sit and the minimum dimensions at which it stays legally valid.
- Small-packaging route — where your packaging is genuinely too small, the dematerialised option and how to use it properly.
What it is not
This service prepares your marking. It is separate from your extended producer responsibility registration and the unique identifier you receive from an eco-organisme such as CITEO. If you are not yet registered, tell us and we will point you to the right route — but registration is not included here.
Why it is worth getting right
- Retailer and marketplace gatekeeping — French retailers and platforms check for the sorting mark as a listing condition. This is usually how brands find out they are missing it.
- Reprint avoidance — the marking has to be designed into artwork. Adding it after a print run means another print run.
- Component-level accuracy — a generic Triman logo with no Info-Tri block, or one that lumps all components together, does not satisfy the requirement.
- One market, handled properly — if France matters to you, this is a small, bounded piece of work with a clear deliverable.
